Manila, Mar 2: Gambling businessman Atong Ang remains at large despite an intensified nationwide manhunt that has led police to raid at least 20 locations since January, the chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Monday.PNP chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. told reporters at Camp Crame that authorities have repeatedly searched properties and areas linked to Ang but have so far failed to locate him.“We have visited and raided at least 20 areas — some even two or three times,” Nartatez said during a press briefing, speaking largely in Filipino. “We have also checked several islands following reports of his possible presence, but those turned out negative.

”Kidnapping charges tied to missing sabungerosAng is facing kidnapping charges in connection with the disappearance of at least 34 cockfighting enthusiasts, locally known as sabungeros, between 2021 and 2022. Investigators allege the men were abducted after being suspected of cheating in cockfighting matches. The case has drawn widespread public attention, particularly among families of the missing, who have been calling for accountability and answers for years. While the PNP chief declined to reveal specific locations involved in the latest searches, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) had earlier said operations were focused on Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and the Bicol Region.

Monitoring associates, watching bordersAuthorities are also keeping close watch on Ang’s known associates in case he is being sheltered, Nartatez said. The PNP is coordinating with international law enforcement partners amid concerns that the businessman could attempt to leave the country using an alias.

Despite that possibility, Nartatez said the latest intelligence indicates Ang is still in the Philippines. The manhunt remains active, with police continuing surveillance and follow-up operations based on new leads.Other high-profile fugitivesThe PNP chief also confirmed that efforts are ongoing to locate other high-profile fugitives, including former Bureau of Corrections head Gerald Bantag and former Ako Bicol party-list representative Zaldy Co, who has resigned from Congress.Authorities have not provided a timeline for potential arrests but stressed that operations will continue until those facing charges are brought before the courts. For families of the missing sabungeros, the prolonged search underscores both the complexity of the case and the enduring wait for justice.
