Trump escalates Iran pressure as economic concerns shadow midterm race

Washington, 21 Feb : U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply escalated pressure on Iran, ordering a substantial military buildup in the Middle East and raising the possibility of air strikes, even as senior aides and party strategists urge a return to domestic economic priorities ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.

In recent weeks, Washington has positioned aircraft carriers, warships and combat aircraft closer to Iranian borders, a move officials say is intended both to deter Tehran and to prepare for potential military operations if diplomatic efforts falter. However, the administration has yet to offer a detailed case to the American public explaining why such an aggressive posture is necessary.

A senior U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, acknowledged there is still “no unified support” within the White House for an actual attack on Iran, and advisers caution that a drawn-out conflict could distract from domestic issues that voters care about most — including inflation and cost of living pressures.

Another White House official defended Trump’s approach, arguing that his foreign policy actions have “directly translated into wins for the American people” and underscored that the president prefers diplomacy, insisting Tehran should “make a deal before it is too late.” The administration also stressed that Iran must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons or the capacity to build them.

Trump himself has repeatedly warned Iran that it must “better negotiate a fair deal” on its nuclear programme, while signalling he is “considering” limited military strikes if negotiations do not produce results.

Political Stakes Ahead of Midterms

Republican strategists acknowledge the political danger inherent in a crisis-driven foreign policy at this moment. One strategist described the possibility of a prolonged conflict as a “significant political peril” for Trump and Republican candidates, noting that many voters remain wary of foreign engagements after years of overseas wars.

Another GOP adviser said the administration must link any potential military action clearly to U.S. security and economic well-being to retain support from the president’s base and undecided voters.

Diplomacy in Parallel

Amid rising tensions, Iran’s foreign minister has indicated that Tehran is preparing a written counterproposal in ongoing negotiations with U.S. envoys, suggesting that diplomatic avenues remain open even as military preparations continue.
