World, Mar 3: Authorities in southern Peru have shut down an illegal sports betting venue in the city of Juliaca, marking another step in the government’s campaign to clamp down on unauthorised gambling operations.The intervention was led by Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), which oversees the regulation of remote gaming and sports betting in the country. Inspectors raided the premises in the district of Juliaca, located in the San Román province of Puno, after determining that it was operating without legal authorisation.During the operation, officials seized 15 computer systems allegedly used to manage online sports betting activities. The venue was fully sealed.
Action Under Gambling LawThe closure was carried out under Law No. 31557, Peru’s regulatory framework governing remote gaming and sports betting. The law establishes strict licensing requirements and operational standards for both online and physical betting platforms.In a statement, Mincetur said the intervention forms part of its broader strategy to enforce compliance and eliminate unlicensed gambling establishments.
