Bostan, Jan 22: Massachusetts posted a record $98.5 million in adjusted gross sports betting revenue in December, setting a new high for tax receipts from wagering as online betting continued to dominate the market.
Taxable gaming revenue rose 3.8% from the previous record of $94.9 million set in November and was 71.3% higher year on year, according to data released by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.
Gross gaming revenue before adjustments climbed to $102.5 million, marking the first time the state’s monthly sports betting total exceeded $100 million.
Online wagering accounted for the bulk of activity, generating $97.1 million, while retail sportsbooks contributed $1.3 million. Total betting handle for the month reached $845.3 million, up 7.2% from a year earlier but 7.6% below November’s record $914.7 million. The statewide hold stood at 11.65%.
DraftKings retained its lead in the online market, posting $53.4 million in taxable revenue from $447.5 million in bets. FanDuel followed with $25.6 million from $202.2 million, while Fanatics ranked third with $8.3 million from $79.2 million.
Elsewhere, BetMGM generated $5.5 million, theScore Bet reported $2.3 million, Caesars posted $1.6 million, and Bally Bet reported $397,137.
In retail betting, Encore Boston Harbor led with $654,688 in revenue, with the remainder split between MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park Casino.
The state’s land-based casinos reported $97.9 million in gross gaming revenue, down 4.5% from a year earlier and below November levels. Slots generated $69.5 million, while table games brought in $28.4 million.
Combined tax revenue from sports betting and casino gaming totalled $47.5 million for the month, including a record $19.6 million from sports wagering and $27.9 million from land-based casinos.
