New Delhi, Aug 22: A new skywalk at Madhuban Chowk in northwest Delhi, aimed at improving pedestrian safety at one of the city’s busiest intersections, is expected to be completed by November 30, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Saturday. The project is currently around 60 per cent complete and has an estimated cost of nearly Rs 9.62 crore, officials said.
Madhuban Chowk is located close to Pitampura Metro Station, Madhuban Chowk Metro Station, Rohini District Court and major commercial areas. The intersection experiences heavy traffic and has been identified among Delhi’s pedestrian accident-prone locations.
The proposed elevated walkway will provide a dedicated route for pedestrians between the two Metro stations and Rohini District Court, allowing commuters to avoid crossing the busy Outer Ring Road at ground level. The facility is expected to benefit Metro passengers as well as lawyers, court employees, visitors and residents travelling between the surrounding areas.
According to officials, the skywalk is being developed in three sections. One section will connect the two Metro stations, another will extend towards Rohini District Court, while the third will lead towards the road junction connecting areas such as Prashant Vihar and Wazirpur. The project was initially conceived as an approximately 800-metre foot overbridge connecting Metro corridors around Pitampura.
The plan was subsequently revised to create a wider skywalk network with a direct connection to Rohini District Court.Officials said the pedestrian facility is also expected to help reduce conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles and improve traffic movement around the junction.
Authorities are considering additional grills along the central road divider to discourage pedestrians from crossing the busy road directly and encourage use of the elevated walkway.Once completed, the Madhuban Chowk facility will be Delhi’s third skywalk.
The other two are located at ITO and South Campus. The project is part of efforts to strengthen pedestrian infrastructure and encourage safer, public transport-oriented mobility in the national capital.
