Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Aug 22: An 18-year-old boy and his parents died in a tragic incident at Khavdya Dongar near Tisgaon in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, officials said.The incident occurred on Friday when the teenager, identified as Kunal Chandwade, reportedly climbed to the edge of a cliff after an argument with his parents over their refusal to buy him an expensive mobile phone.
According to police, Kunal reached the cliff around 10 am and remained near the edge despite repeated appeals from his parents, villagers and local officials to move to safety.A rescue team from the fire brigade also reached the spot and attempted to place safety nets below the cliff. However, the operation was difficult as the teenager continued moving along the edge.
Local residents and officials reportedly spent several hours trying to persuade him to step away from the dangerous spot. Despite their efforts, Kunal eventually jumped from the cliff.His father, Murlidhar Chandwade, attempted to save him and moved towards his son. Witnesses said the father lost his balance while trying to catch Kunal, resulting in both falling from the cliff.
Kunal’s mother, Sangeeta, also died after falling from the cliff shortly afterwards.Police recovered the bodies of all three and sent them for postmortem examinations. Their relatives subsequently took the remains to their native village in Jalna district for the last rites.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Ratnakar Navale said further details were being ascertained as part of the investigation.
The incident has drawn attention to the dangers of impulsive decisions during moments of emotional distress and the importance of immediate support and intervention in such situations.
