Spain, Mar 7: Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has publicly rejected pressure from the United States to allow military bases in southern Spain to be used for a possible strike on Iran, warning that further conflict in the Middle East would have serious humanitarian and economic consequences.

In a televised address on Wednesday, Sánchez said Spain would not support actions that could escalate tensions in the region, stressing that governments have a responsibility to protect the welfare of their citizens rather than benefit from armed conflicts. He cautioned that another war in the Middle East could lead to heavy loss of life, increased instability and economic disruption.

Sánchez also criticised the use of war as a political distraction, saying leaders should prioritise public welfare instead of pursuing policies that primarily benefit a small group of interests. The remarks came hours after former US president Donald Trump reportedly warned of trade consequences if Spain refused to allow the use of two jointly operated military bases in the southern region of Andalucía for operations against Iran.

Sánchez said Spain would not support decisions that contradict its values and national interests or that could worsen global instability. His stance has drawn mixed reactions within Spain. Supporters from the prime minister’s political base welcomed the remarks, while opposition leaders accused him of risking Spain’s strategic relationship with the United States.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the conservative People’s Party, criticised Sánchez for what he described as politicising foreign policy. Meanwhile, Santiago Abascal of the far-right Vox party accused the government of undermining national interests.

Analysts say Sánchez has often taken outspoken positions on international issues, including criticism of Israel’s military operations in Gaza and calls for stronger protections for migrants.Despite his strong statements, similar positions have not been widely echoed by other major European leaders.

While some governments have expressed concern about rising tensions with Iran, many have adopted more cautious approaches due to diplomatic and strategic considerations.

France’s President Emmanuel Macron expressed solidarity with Spain following the reported US trade warning but has also emphasised the need for diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the region.

European leaders are currently navigating a complex geopolitical situation, balancing alliances with the United States while attempting to prevent further escalation in the Middle East.
