Quote by Michael Sandel sparks debate on justice, inequality and moral value in modern economies

US, Mar 14: A widely discussed quote by political philosopher Michael Sandel has reignited debate on economic inequality and the moral limits of market-driven societies at a time when global wealth concentration continues to rise.

Sandel, a professor of political philosophy at Harvard University known for his work on justice and ethics, has argued that fairness in society involves more than the distribution of resources.

“Justice is not only about the right way to distribute things. It is also about the right way to value things,” he has said, emphasising that debates on justice must consider not only wealth allocation but also the social value placed on different forms of work and human dignity.

The idea has gained renewed attention amid global economic data showing sharp disparities in wealth distribution.

Recent estimates indicate that global wealth exceeded USD 454 trillion in 2024, with the richest one per cent controlling nearly half of the world’s assets.

Economic studies also suggest that the wealthiest 10 per cent of the global population hold close to three-quarters of total wealth, while millions continue to face rising costs of healthcare, education and housing.

Sandel’s argument challenges the notion that markets alone should determine social value, raising questions about whether societies prioritise profit over dignity and the broader common good.

The debate became particularly visible during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when frontline workers such as grocery staff, nurses, sanitation workers and delivery drivers were widely described as “essential”.

Despite public recognition of their role in maintaining basic services during lockdowns, labour data later showed that many of these workers earned significantly less than office-based professionals.

Observers say this gap highlights a deeper issue in modern economies, where jobs critical to social functioning may not receive equivalent economic recognition.

According to Sandel’s philosophy, the issue goes beyond wages and reflects how societies assign honour and moral value to different forms of work.

Analysts say the discussion has become increasingly relevant as governments and policymakers around the world grapple with questions of economic justice, ethical leadership and widening wealth gaps.

The broader question raised by Sandel’s work, scholars note, is whether societies should measure success solely through market outcomes or place greater emphasis on human dignity and the collective well-being of communities.
