New Delhi, Feb 25: Microsoft has announced plans to invest $50 billion by the end of this decade to expand access to artificial intelligence (AI) across countries in the Global South, warning that unequal access to emerging technologies could widen global economic divides. In a blog post released Wednesday, Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft, and Natasha Crampton, the company’s Chief Responsible AI Officer, highlighted what they described as a growing “AI divide.” According to the company, AI adoption rates in wealthier nations are nearly double those in developing economies — a gap that could significantly influence future growth and opportunity.Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit, Smith drew a parallel with the electrification era of the 20th century, noting that countries that gained early access to electricity saw transformative economic advantages.

He cautioned that unless access to AI tools, infrastructure and skills is broadened, similar disparities could emerge in the digital age.Focus on India: Training Teachers, Reaching StudentsAlongside the global investment plan, Microsoft unveiled a large-scale education initiative in India titled “Elevate for Educators.” The programme aims to strengthen the capabilities of two million teachers across more than 200,000 schools, vocational institutes and higher education institutions. The company said the initiative is expected to indirectly benefit approximately eight million students by integrating AI literacy into classrooms through partnerships with national education and workforce training authorities. The move reflects India’s growing importance in the global AI landscape.

Microsoft noted that India is home to the world’s second-largest developer community on GitHub, with 24 million users, and remains one of the fastest-growing digital ecosystems among major economies.Five-Point Strategy for AI InclusionMicrosoft outlined a five-pronged approach to ensuring broader AI diffusion:Expanding digital infrastructure, including data centresEnhancing AI skills and accessibility through schools and nonprofitsSupporting multilingual AI systemsEncouraging local innovation ecosystemsImproving data and measurement systems to help policymakers track progressThe company said that during the last fiscal year alone, it invested over $8 billion in data centre infrastructure across emerging markets, including projects in India, Mexico, several African nations, South America, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.Skill Development TargetsGlobally, Microsoft has set a target to help 20 million people acquire AI skills by 2028. In India specifically, the company aims to equip 20 million individuals with essential AI skills by 2030. It reported that 5.6 million people in India were trained in AI-related skills in 2025.In addition, Microsoft Research is collaborating with Indian partners to develop “Samiksh,” a community-focused AI evaluation framework designed to incorporate local languages and cultural nuances — areas often overlooked in English-dominated AI testing environments.Addressing the AI DivideCompany leaders emphasized that expanding AI access is not only about infrastructure but also about ensuring fairness, inclusion and responsible deployment.

Without deliberate efforts, they said, advanced technologies could concentrate economic benefits in already-advantaged regions. As governments and private companies worldwide accelerate AI adoption, Microsoft’s announcement signals a broader push to ensure that emerging economies are not left behind in what many describe as the defining technological shift of the 21st century. For countries like India — balancing rapid digital growth with deep developmental challenges — the coming decade may determine whether AI becomes a tool of inclusion or another layer in the global inequality gap.
