ILO calls on world leaders to put social justice at the heart of economic policy

World, Mar 3: As families across the world grapple with rising food prices, housing costs and economic uncertainty, the International Labour Organization (ILO) is urging governments to refocus on social justice as the cornerstone of stability and long-term prosperity.Speaking at an informal meeting of European employment ministers and in commemoration of the World Day of Social Justice, ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo delivered a clear message: fair wages and decent work are not optional ideals — they are essential foundations for social cohesion.“Living wages are central to advancing social justice,” Houngbo said, warning that without deliberate policies, economic transformation could leave millions behind.

Fair Work as a FoundationHoungbo stressed that employment policies must be grounded in international labour standards. That means ensuring workers have access to adequate social protection, fair pay, opportunities to build new skills and protection from discrimination and inequality. At a time when many countries are navigating demographic changes, climate action commitments and rapid digital transformation, he said governments must ensure these transitions are just and inclusive.Green and digital shifts may be necessary, Houngbo acknowledged, but without thoughtful policymaking they risk deepening regional disparities and fuelling social unrest.“If transitions are not managed carefully,” he warned, “the risks of exclusion and resistance will grow.”Dialogue as a Safety NetCentral to the ILO’s message is the importance of social dialogue — bringing together governments, employers and workers to design policies collaboratively.Countries with strong dialogue systems, Houngbo noted, are consistently better prepared to weather crises and recover more inclusively. In times of rapid change, trust between institutions and citizens becomes one of the most valuable assets a society can have.

He urged governments worldwide to renew their commitment to democratic resilience, shared prosperity and international cooperation, framing social justice not just as a moral goal but as a practical investment in long-term economic stability.A Local Perspective in NigeriaIn Nigeria, civil society organization ActionAid Nigeria marked the World Day of Social Justice with a reminder that fairness does not happen automatically. The group said the day serves as a call to action, particularly in communities still battling hunger, widening inequality and limited access to opportunity.Across parts of the country, families continue to feel the weight of rising living costs and constrained job markets, underscoring the urgency of policies that prioritise inclusive growth.

Beyond WordsThe ILO’s appeal comes at a pivotal moment. While global economies show signs of recovery in some regions, many workers remain in precarious jobs, and wage growth in several countries has failed to keep pace with inflation. For Houngbo and the ILO, social justice is not an abstract concept reserved for speeches or commemorative days. It is about ensuring that economic growth translates into tangible improvements in people’s lives — secure jobs, fair pay, social protection and dignity at work.As governments debate budgets and reform packages in the months ahead, the question raised by the World Day of Social Justice is simple but profound: will economic transformation be shaped to benefit everyone, or only a few?The ILO’s message is clear — sustainable prosperity depends on getting that answer right.
