Ranchi, July 10: Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against 100 to 150 unidentified persons in connection with the stampede and violence that broke out during the Jharkhand Premier League (JPL) 2026 final at the JSCA International Stadium in Dhurwa, Ranchi.
The FIR was lodged at Dhurwa Police Station on the complaint of Sub-Inspector Hiralal Sah following the incident that occurred on June 24 during the high-profile cricket final.
According to the police complaint, an unexpectedly large crowd gathered at the stadium after the organisers distributed a substantial number of free passes while also allowing free entry for the general public.
The turnout reportedly exceeded the stadium’s expected capacity, resulting in severe overcrowding both inside and outside the venue.
The complaint states that slow security screening at the entry gates caused long queues and congestion at the main entrance.
As the crowd continued to swell, police personnel struggled to maintain order and control the situation.
The situation worsened after the stadium reached full capacity and the management shut the entry gates to prevent additional spectators from entering.
The sudden closure reportedly triggered unrest among people waiting outside, leading to pushing, panic, and a stampede-like situation.
Several people sustained injuries during the chaos, while incidents of vandalism and property damage were also reported.
Police have initiated an investigation and are examining CCTV footage from the stadium to identify those involved in the violence and damage to property.
Authorities said legal action will be taken against all individuals found responsible once they are identified. The case has been registered against unknown persons under relevant provisions of law, and the investigation is ongoing.
Police have appealed to the public to maintain order during large public events and assured that those responsible for disrupting public peace will be brought to justice.
