Bridgetown, July 18: Sir Garfield “Garry” Sobers, widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder in the history of cricket, has passed away at the age of 89, leaving the cricketing world in mourning.
Sobers, who represented the West Indies with distinction for more than two decades, was celebrated for his extraordinary ability with both bat and ball, as well as his exceptional fielding.
His versatility made him one of the most complete cricketers the sport has ever produced.Born on July 28, 1936, in Bridgetown, Barbados, Sobers overcame a difficult childhood after losing his father during World War II.
Raised by his mother along with five siblings, he developed his cricketing skills by playing street cricket with makeshift equipment, using pieces of wood as bats and homemade balls.
Sobers made his first-class debut at the age of 16 and earned his Test cap for the West Indies in 1954.
He announced himself on the world stage with a record-breaking unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958, becoming the youngest player at the time to score a Test triple century.
The record stood for 36 years before it was surpassed by fellow West Indian Brian Lara.
In 1968, Sobers created another historic milestone by becoming the first cricketer to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket.
During his illustrious first-class career, he amassed 28,314 runs and claimed 1,043 wickets, underlining his status as one of the game’s finest all-rounders.
In recognition of his remarkable contribution to cricket, Queen Elizabeth II conferred a knighthood upon him in 1975.
Barbados later honoured him as a National Hero in 1998, one of the country’s highest civilian distinctions.
Sobers was also named among the five greatest cricketers of the 20th century by Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack.
Australian legend Sir Donald Bradman once described him as the greatest all-round cricketer he had ever seen.
The passing of Sir Garfield Sobers marks the end of an era in world cricket.
