Geneva, Mar 26: Concerns over the widening gap between economic growth and human rights protections took centre stage at a recent event held on the sidelines of the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, with experts warning.

That development without accountability risks deepening inequality and injustice.

The discussion, titled “Economic Growth and Human Rights Deprivation” and hosted by the International Career Support Association, focused on how rapid economic expansion in countries such as Pakistan has often overshadowed persistent human rights concerns.

Japanese activist Shun Fujiki said that despite Pakistan being a signatory to nearly 27 international human rights conventions, serious violations—including enforced disappearances and allegations of torture—continue to be reported.

He stressed the need for stronger compliance with global obligations, noting that adherence is crucial for maintaining trade privileges such as the European Union’s GSP+ status.

Former Bangladeshi parliamentarian Muhammad Habibe Millat underlined that economic growth cannot be sustained without democratic governance and civil liberties, drawing parallels with challenges faced in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Lakhu Luhana of the World Sindhi Congress pointed to rising poverty and inequality in Pakistan’s Sindh province.

He also questioned the role of international stakeholders, including the European Union, alleging that external assistance sometimes ends up supporting state structures without adequately benefiting vulnerable populations.

Participants at the event collectively called for stronger international oversight, improved accountability mechanisms and closer alignment between economic policies and human rights commitments.

They emphasised that development should be inclusive and equitable, ensuring that its benefits reach all sections of society rather than a select few.
