Chennai, Jan 9: Chennai saw a welcome dip in murders and other major crimes in 2025, reflecting the impact of sustained preventive policing and intensified enforcement, the Greater Chennai City Police (GCCP) said on Tuesday.
Police Commissioner A. Arun said the city recorded 105 murder cases each in 2023 and 2024, but the number fell to 93 in 2025. “Murders and other crimes have come down in the city,” he said, attributing the decline to focused policing and early intervention strategies.
Statistics released by the GCCP showed a marked reduction in rowdy murders, robberies and other serious offences during the year. Street crimes that directly affect daily life, such as mobile phone snatching and vehicle theft, also registered a noticeable drop, offering residents a greater sense of safety.
Police officials said the improvement was driven by stronger surveillance, targeted crackdowns and preventive action against repeat offenders. In 2025 alone, the Goondas Act was invoked against 1,092 habitual offenders as part of efforts to curb criminal activity before it escalated.
The GCCP also underlined stricter enforcement in cases involving crimes against children. According to the police, courts awarded stringent punishments in 66 cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act during the year.
“Effective preventive measures led to a significant decline in rowdy murders, robberies, serious crimes, mobile phone snatching and vehicle theft cases in 2025,” the police said, adding that similar strategies would be continued to further strengthen public safety in the city.
