Jamshedpur, July 13 : The family of a labourer who died of electrocution while working on a drinking water pipeline project in Jamshedpur has been provided compensation of ₹10 lakh by the contractor of the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department (DWSD), officials said on Sunday.
The deceased, identified as Chetan Yadav, was electrocuted on Saturday evening while laying a drinking water pipeline from Jaipal Colony to the Bhalubasa water tank. He was a resident of Pesham village in Giridih district.
The compensation cheque was handed over to the victim’s family on Sunday by the project contractor. Following the payment, the family left for their native village with the body to perform the last rites.
The compensation, however, triggered a political tussle, with several leaders claiming credit for facilitating the financial assistance.
Leaders of the Janata Dal (United) and supporters of MLA Saryu Roy claimed the compensation was secured due to their intervention. Meanwhile, Jamshedpur Mayor Sudha Gupta asserted that the relief was provided following her initiative and efforts.
Other local leaders, including District President Subodh Srivastava, Metropolitan President Ajay Kumar, and Pappu Singh, also maintained that sustained pressure on the contractor helped ensure the compensation was paid to the bereaved family.
