New Delhi, March 2: Droupadi Murmu on Monday launched the ‘Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana’, a women-centric scheme aimed at promoting the economic empowerment, education and financial security of girls in the national capital.
The scheme was unveiled during the programme “Sashakt Nari, Samriddh Delhi”, organised by the Department of Women and Child Development at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
The initiative replaces and expands the earlier Ladli Scheme, under which financial assistance was provided to encourage the birth and education of the girl child.
Under the new scheme, the Delhi government will deposit ₹56,000 in stages for eligible girls. With accrued interest, the maturity amount is expected to exceed ₹1 lakh by the time the beneficiary turns 21.
The programme will be implemented through a fully digital framework. Funds will be managed by SBI Life Insurance and invested under the SBI Life Dhanrashi Sadhan plan. The maturity amount will be transferred directly to Aadhaar-linked bank accounts to ensure transparency.
To qualify, the family’s annual income must not exceed ₹1.20 lakh, the family must have lived in Delhi for at least three years, and the girl child must be born in Delhi. Benefits will be limited to two girl children per family.
Officials said the scheme is designed to promote higher education and professional diploma courses, with the final maturity benefit linked to the fulfilment of educational conditions.
During the programme, the Delhi government also transferred ₹100.25 crore to 40,642 beneficiaries of the Ladli Scheme under the “Meri Poonji, Mera Adhikar” initiative through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), marking one of the largest DBT rollouts for girl beneficiaries in Delhi.
In addition, the government launched the ‘Saheli Pink Smart Card’, which will provide free bus travel for women in Delhi to improve mobility and access to opportunities.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu said, “I am confident that all these newly-launched schemes will empower the sisters and daughters of Delhi and make a significant contribution towards building a prosperous Delhi.”
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the day as historic, saying the initiative celebrated the entire journey of a daughter from birth to becoming self-reliant.
The event was attended by Delhi Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena, Union Minister Harsh Malhotra, Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, and BJP leader Pankaj Singh, among others.
Officials said the scheme aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen women’s empowerment through education, dignity and self-reliance.
