Guwahati, Jan 3: The family of acclaimed Assamese singer, composer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg on January 2 announced plans to institutionalise his legacy through the creation of a dedicated trust that will carry forward his contributions to art, society and the environment.
The announcement was made by Palmee Borthakur and Garima Garg, who said the initiative was aimed at preserving Zubeen Garg’s ideals and public life beyond his celebrated musical career.
“Zubeen Garg is, and will always remain, an integral and eternal part of Assam and its people,” they said, emphasising the need to safeguard his dreams, dedication, creativity, beliefs and body of work for future generations.
According to the family, the proposed trust will be named the Kalaguru Artist Foundation and will function in accordance with Garg’s long-standing vision for social welfare, cultural preservation, environmental consciousness and youth engagement.
As a first step, the family has decided to dedicate their property at Kharghuli in Guwahati to the trust, which will serve as a hub for its activities.
The foundation will also extend support to the Abhinaya: Jongki Barthakur Environment Art Centre, established by Zubeen Garg in memory of his late sister.
In addition, plans are underway to set up a research wing that will document and study Garg’s life, artistic journey and wider socio-cultural impact on Assam and the Northeast.
The initiative is envisioned as a collective effort, with the family expressing their intent to work closely with Garg’s friends, seniors, juniors and admirers across Assam’s social, cultural, administrative and media circles. Members of the Zubeen Fan Club—often described by the artist himself as his “army”—are also expected to play an active role in the trust’s activities.
Appealing for public support, the family sought the blessings of the people of Assam to help carry forward Zubeen Garg’s legacy through structured cultural, social and intellectual initiatives.
They said the trust would strive to ensure that the values and creative spirit associated with the artist continue to inspire future generations.
