Jamshedpur, July 15: The National Medical Council (NMC) has approved a major expansion in MBBS admissions at the Netaji Subhash Group’s medical colleges, significantly strengthening medical education capacity in Jharkhand and Bihar. With the latest approval, Netaji Subhash Medical College, Adityapur, Jamshedpur, will double its annual MBBS intake from 100 to 200 seats, while the group’s Bihta campus in Patna will increase admissions from 150 to 250 seats—the highest intake permitted under NMC regulations.
The development was announced by Netaji Subhash University Chancellor Madan Mohan Singh during a press conference in Jamshedpur on Wednesday. He said the enhanced intake has been confirmed in the latest list released by the National Medical Council on Tuesday.
“The increase in MBBS seats has been confirmed in the new list released on the NMC website on Tuesday,” Singh said.
Describing the approval as a rare achievement, the Chancellor said it is uncommon for a medical college in India to witness such a steep increase in student intake within a short period.
“It has been rarely seen in the medical history of the country that within just one or two years, the seats of a college have doubled or increased so significantly,” he said.
Singh further noted that the Bihta campus has now achieved the maximum annual MBBS intake allowed under NMC regulations.
“As per NMC norms, the maximum intake for any medical college in India is 250 seats, and the Bihta campus has achieved this highest standard,” he added.
In another major announcement, Singh unveiled plans to establish a new medical institution near Ranchi. The proposed Madan Mohan Medical College and Hospital will be developed at Bayandi, around six kilometres east of Ring Road Rampur Chowk on the Tata–Ranchi National Highway.
According to him, the new institution is expected to commence academic operations in 2028 with an initial intake of 150 MBBS students, and the formal process for setting up the college has already begun.
“A new medical college, Madan Mohan Medical College and Hospital, is being established near Ranchi and is targeted to begin with 150 MBBS seats in 2028. The official process has already started,” Singh said.
The expansion of MBBS seats and the proposed establishment of a new medical college are expected to significantly enhance medical education infrastructure in eastern India, creating more opportunities for aspiring doctors from Jharkhand, Bihar and neighbouring states while contributing to the region’s long-term healthcare workforce.
