Ranchi, July 7: A woman from the Birhor tribal community was critically injured after allegedly jumping from the third floor of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) here on Monday evening, a day after her newborn died during treatment, hospital officials said.

The incident occurred around 8 pm when the woman was being discharged from the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. According to RIMS Public Relations Officer Dr. Shishir, hospital staff and the woman’s relatives were escorting her in a lift when it stopped on the third floor after descending from the fourth floor.

“The woman was being discharged from the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department. The lift stopped on the third floor after descending from the fourth floor. She suddenly got out of the lift and jumped before anyone could stop her,” Dr. Shishir said.

The woman sustained multiple serious injuries and was rushed to the Central Emergency before being shifted to the ICU of the Trauma Centre. Her condition remains critical.

“She has suffered serious injuries on several parts of her body. A team of specialist doctors is continuously monitoring her,” the PRO said.

Hospital officials said the woman had recently delivered a baby in Hazaribagh. After both the mother and the newborn developed complications, they were referred to RIMS on July 4 for specialised treatment. The newborn died during treatment on Sunday night, following which the woman was reportedly under severe mental distress.

The incident created panic inside the hospital premises as security personnel and medical staff rushed to her aid.

“The hospital administration is investigating the entire incident and gathering facts,” Dr. Shishir said.

Doctors at the hospital said women can experience severe physical and psychological changes after childbirth, particularly following the loss of a child. They stressed that timely emotional support, close monitoring and mental health intervention by family members and healthcare workers are crucial during the postpartum period, adding that recognising signs of severe psychological distress can help prevent such tragedies.
