Kohima, Mar 7: In a step aimed at strengthening grievance redressal for women, the National Commission for Women (NCW), in collaboration with the Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW), will organise district-wise ‘Mahila Jan Sunwai’ (public hearings) across Nagaland from March 9 to 13.

Addressing a press conference in Kohima, NSCW chairperson W Nginyeih Konyak said the initiative is designed to provide women with a direct platform to raise grievances and seek institutional support.

“The public hearings aim to provide women with a direct platform to raise grievances and seek institutional support,” she said.

According to officials, the hearings will allow women to lodge complaints related to domestic violence, workplace harassment, maternity benefits, abandonment, trafficking and other forms of gender-based injustice. The programme is part of a nationwide outreach initiative to ensure quicker grievance redressal and greater awareness of women’s rights.

Dedicated benches comprising members of the NSCW, district administration officials, representatives from the District Legal Services Authority, police officials, legal experts and protection officers will be present during the hearings.

“They will provide immediate hearing of complaints, legal guidance, registration of cases where necessary, and time-bound follow-up mechanisms,” Konyak said, adding that walk-in complaints will also be accepted without prior registration.

The hearings will be held at DC Conference Halls in various districts, beginning on March 9 in Tuensang, Zunheboto, Tseminyu and Wokha districts. Subsequent sessions will take place in Mokokchung and Niuland on March 10, Chumoukedima on March 11, Longleng and Peren on March 12, and Mon, Kohima and Dimapur on March 13.

Organised as part of the observance of International Women’s Day, the initiative seeks to move beyond symbolic celebrations and focus on practical measures to strengthen women’s safety, dignity and access to justice.

Officials added that the remaining districts in the state will also host Mahila Jan Sunwai on later dates to expand the outreach.
