Gangtok, Dec 30: Sikkim Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) on Tuesday attended the State-Level Namsoong Festival at Lingee, Nalipartam, under the Tumin–Lingee Constituency, highlighting the rich indigenous heritage of the Lepcha community.

Namsoong, the traditional New Year and harvest festival of the Lepchas—one of the oldest indigenous communities of Sikkim—marks the beginning of a new agricultural cycle and reflects the community’s deep spiritual connection with nature.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said that Namsoong symbolises the Lepcha people’s sacred bond with Mayel Lyang, the ancestral homeland of the Lepchas, often referred to as the “Hidden Paradise.

” He noted that the festival embodies gratitude towards nature and reinforces the community’s values of harmony and sustainability.

Shri Tamang remarked that the Lepcha way of life, rooted in humility, peaceful coexistence, and respect for the environment, offers valuable lessons in the face of contemporary environmental and social challenges.

He also referred to the civilisational concept of Lho-Men-Tsong-Sum, which represents the historical unity of the Lepcha, Bhutia, and Nepali communities that together form the cultural foundation of Sikkim.

The Chief Minister подчеркed that Sikkim’s history is marked by harmony and mutual respect among communities rather than conflict or conquest.

He acknowledged the wisdom, resilience, and cultural contributions of the Lepcha community, describing them as a strong moral foundation of the state.

Reaffirming the state government’s commitment, Shri Tamang said continuous efforts are being undertaken to preserve and promote the Lepcha language, culture, and heritage through policy initiatives, cultural programmes, and educational support.

Extending warm greetings on the occasion of Namsoong, the Chief Minister wished peace, prosperity, and happiness for all households.

He also invoked the blessings of Mount Kangchenjunga, India’s highest peak and a sacred symbol for the people of Sikkim, expressing hope that the state remains united, peaceful, and progressive.

The festival celebrations featured traditional rituals and vibrant cultural performances, showcasing the living traditions and rich cultural legacy of the Lepcha community.
