Kathmandu, Mar 28: KP Sharma Oli, Nepal’s former prime minister, was arrested early Saturday over his alleged role in a deadly police crackdown on protests last year that led to multiple fatalities, officials said.
Police detained the three-time former premier from his residence in Kathmandu along with former home affairs minister Ramesh Lekhak.
The arrests come a day after Balendra Shah was sworn in as the country’s new prime minister following a decisive electoral victory.According to officials, at least 19 protesters were killed when security forces opened fire during youth-led demonstrations in September last year.
The protests, triggered by a social media ban and allegations of corruption, later escalated into nationwide unrest, leading to further casualties and the eventual collapse of the government.
A government-backed investigation into the violence had recommended action against Oli, Lekhak and senior police officials, citing alleged negligence in handling the situation.
The report suggested that their conduct contributed to the deaths, including those of minors.
Confirming the development, police said the arrests were made in line with the recommendations of the inquiry panel.
Newly appointed home affairs minister Sudan Gurung said the action was aimed at ensuring accountability. “No one is above the law. This is the beginning of justice,” he said in a statement.
Oli’s legal counsel, however, termed the arrest unlawful, arguing there was no risk of the former prime minister evading investigation.
Local media reported that the 74-year-old leader, who has known health issues, was taken to a hospital following his detention.
The developments follow sustained public pressure to hold those responsible for the crackdown accountable.
Shah’s rise to power has been widely seen as a reflection of public anger against the political establishment and support for reform and transparency. Authorities said further investigation into the case is underway.
