May 23 – Google on Tuesday unveiled Android XR, a new operating system designed for extended reality (XR) devices, marking a significant expansion of its AI and hardware ambitions into the wearables space. The announcement, made at the company’s annual I/O developer conference, highlights Google’s strategy to embed its Gemini artificial intelligence model into a growing ecosystem of immersive and hands-free devices.

Android XR is built to support a range of XR products, including smart glasses and mixed reality headsets. It leverages Gemini’s multimodal AI capabilities to enable devices that can process visual and audio input in real time, allowing for contextual, hands-free interactions.

As part of the announcement, Google offered a first look at prototype smart glasses powered by Android XR. The glasses, equipped with cameras, microphones, and speakers, are designed to pair with smartphones and provide features such as turn-by-turn navigation, real-time translation, app access, and a privacy-oriented in-lens display.

“They see and hear what you do,” Google said, referring to the glasses’ ability to process sensory data in real time and deliver AI-generated insights. In a live demo, the glasses translated a conversation between two people, displaying subtitles through the lenses—a feature aimed at removing language barriers in everyday communication.

To boost user adoption, Google has partnered with eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to create Android XR-compatible frames that blend fashion and technology. Luxury label Kering Eyewear is also slated to join the effort.

“We’re building glasses you’ll actually want to wear all day,” the company said, underscoring its focus on design as well as functionality.

The move builds on Google’s earlier XR collaborations with Samsung and Qualcomm. Project Moohan, a mixed reality headset developed by Samsung and expected to debut in late 2025, is part of this joint initiative. The partnership is now expanding to include reference hardware and software platforms for smart glasses.

Developers will be able to start building for Android XR later this year, as Google positions itself at the forefront of the next wave of spatial computing.
