May 23 – Social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, experienced a major global outage early Friday, leaving users across several countries unable to access key features on the website and app. The company attributed the disruption to a data center outage but has not provided a timeline for full restoration of services.

The outage began around 1 a.m. IST (1930 GMT, May 22), with a spike in user reports on DownDetector highlighting difficulties in accessing the platform and using core features. Users in the United States, Canada, Peru, France, the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Germany appeared to be the most affected.

In India, most of X’s features remained operational, though some users encountered issues logging in and accessing direct messages (DMs). Several reported seeing error messages such as “Something isn’t right. Please try again later,” and “Cannot retrieve messages.”

X does not operate a public status page, but its developer platform dashboard acknowledged “degraded performance” across some systems and described the situation as a “site-wide outage.” The company’s engineering team posted on the platform, confirming the issue stemmed from a data center outage and stating that a resolution was underway.

The outage prompted reactions from users who were still able to access the platform. While some expressed frustration over the lack of customer service communication, others responded with humor, sharing memes and jokes about the situation.

This marks the second major outage for X in 2025. On March 10, the platform was down for approximately 30 minutes, preventing users from accessing both the mobile app and the web version. A similar incident occurred in September 2024, when the site was offline for over an hour worldwide.

X has not yet commented on whether the latest disruption was related to ongoing infrastructure changes or other technical issues.
