Chennai, April 04: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad remains uncertain for the team’s upcoming match against Delhi Capitals after suffering an elbow injury in the last game against Rajasthan Royals.
Gaikwad, who was hit on the elbow while batting, resumed his innings and went on to score a fifty. However, he has missed training sessions in the lead-up to the match due to soreness.
On the eve of the game, CSK batting coach Michael Hussey provided an update on Gaikwad’s fitness. “He’s going to try and have a bat today for training. And, yeah, it’s still a little bit sore, but it’s improving every day. So, we’re very hopeful, very confident that he’ll be fine for tomorrow,” Hussey said.
Gaikwad, 28, is a key player for CSK, particularly as the team seeks to bounce back from consecutive defeats. His availability could be crucial to the team’s batting lineup.
If Gaikwad is unable to play, CSK might turn to former captain MS Dhoni as a leadership option. Hussey hinted at the possibility, stating, “I’m sure Fleming and Rutu have thought about that. But we’ve got some young guy coming through. He’s behind the stumps. Maybe he can do a good job. I’m not sure. He’s got a bit of experience in the role, so maybe he could do it. But I’m not exactly sure, to be honest.”
A final decision on Gaikwad’s availability will be made after Friday’s training session.
