Faridabad, September 4: Bhupender Gupta on Thursday assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC Limited, India’s premier hydropower company and a Navratna PSU under the Government of India. Prior to this, he was serving as Director (Technical) at THDC India Limited and also holds additional charge as CMD of SJVN Limited.

Gupta, a graduate in electrical engineering with an MBA in Operations, began his career with ACC Ltd in 1991 and entered the CPSU sector with SJVN in 1995. During his 12-year tenure, he worked on the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Plant and also served in Bhutan on the 1020 MW Tala project from 2002 to 2005.

In 2007, he joined REC Ltd. and worked for six years in project financing of hydro and thermal projects. Later, as Additional CEO of REC’s subsidiaries, he led execution, project management, and consultancy for power projects across India, successfully delivering flagship schemes like Saubhagya, DDUGJY, and PMDP.

Later in December 2020, Gupta joined the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan as Director (Technical), where he resolved key construction and contractual issues. Three year later, he was appointed as the Director (Technical) at THDCIL, leading the commissioning of Unit-1 (660 MW) of Khurja STPP and Units 1 & 2 (250 MW each) of Tehri PSP, while guiding teams through major technical challenges.

With over 34 years of experience, including 31 years in power CPSUs, Shri Gupta has played a key role in India’s power sector, contributing to hydro, thermal, renewable, transmission, and distribution projects through planning, execution, and project management.

Gupta envisions meeting India’s rising power demand through non-fossil fuel resources, aiming for energy self-reliance. His focus includes AI integration, EV-grid solutions, green hydrogen, bioenergy, energy storage, and stronger digital security to achieve sustainable energy targets.

Apart from his professional accomplishments, he is also an avid sports enthusiast and actively plays badminton and table tennis. Gupta has also represented his organization in many inter-CPSU tournaments.
