Dharamshala, Jan 20 : The Tibetan government-in-exile is organizing year-long celebrations for the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday on July 6, 2025, with major events planned both globally and in Dharamshala. The milestone has sparked speculation over whether the spiritual leader will address questions about his succession, including the possibility of reincarnation, a matter he previously indicated he would resolve around this age.

The Dalai Lama has suggested the possibility of this being the last Dalai Lama, and when asked about a female successor, he responded, “Why not?” He has also left open the idea of appointing a successor before his demise.

Penpa Tsering, the Sikyong (political leader) and President of the Tibetan government-in-exile, acknowledged the widespread speculation. “It’s all open speculation because his holiness has sometimes said that this could be the last Dalai Lama,” Tsering said. “One thing that has been consistent with his Holiness’s statement since 1969 is whether there should be a 15th Dalai Lama or not will be decided by the Tibetan people.”

Tibetans around the world have written to the Dalai Lama’s private office, urging him to continue the institution. “Tibetan people all around the world have been writing to the private office (of the Dalai Lama) and also copying the religion and culture department here in Dharamshala, requesting His Holiness to continue the institution of the Dalai Lama, which is not only important for Tibetans but for the world through the ancient Indian wisdom and the messages that are embodied through His Holiness the Dalai Lama,” Tsering added.

The issue of reincarnation has also gained geopolitical attention due to China’s interest in the process for political reasons. However, Tsering noted that reincarnation traditionally occurs after the current Dalai Lama’s passing. “According to prophecy, it is said that this Dalai Lama will live very long—113 years of age—so even at 90, if his holiness feels good and if he thinks it’s too early, he might say it’s too early to come out with any… because reincarnation is a process that happens after the demise of the present Lama to carry on the responsibilities left behind by this Lama.”

Celebrations for the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday will include a conference of religious heads in Dharamshala from July 2–4, a long-life prayer offering on July 5, and the official birthday celebration on July 6. Globally, countries where the Dalai Lama has been honored will host events, exhibitions, and films showcasing his life and contributions.

“We will also have international exhibition materials in the form of traditional Thangkas about the life of his holiness, modern-day pictures and movies about his holiness’ messages and his life and deeds. It will be international, and there are also quite a lot of programmes planned in Dharamshala as well,” Tsering said.
