Guwahati, Aug. 7: Assam Police on Friday conducted an early morning operation against an alleged illegal slaughterhouse in Nagaon district, arresting one person and seizing cattle, buffaloes and a quantity of meat suspected to be beef, officials said.
According to the state government, the raid was carried out following specific inputs regarding the alleged unlawful operation. During the search, police recovered 36 cattle, two buffaloes and around 285 kilograms of suspected beef from the premises.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said one accused, identified as Asab Ali, was taken into custody during the operation, while two other suspects are currently absconding. Police teams have launched efforts to trace and apprehend them.
Officials said the seized livestock and other materials have been taken into custody as part of the investigation. The recovered meat will be examined in accordance with legal procedures wherever required.
Police are investigating whether the operation violated provisions of Assam’s laws governing cattle transportation, slaughter and related activities. Authorities are also examining if the alleged slaughterhouse was linked to a wider illegal network.
The Chief Minister reiterated the state’s zero-tolerance policy towards illegal cattle smuggling and unlawful slaughter, stating that strict action would be taken against those found violating the law.
Further investigation is underway, and police said additional legal action will be taken based on the evidence collected during the course of the probe.
