New Delhi, July 17: India’s former captain Rohit Sharma could play what may be his final One Day International (ODI) when India faces England at Lord’s on July 19, according to media reports citing sources familiar with the selection committee’s plans.

The reports suggest that the national selectors are preparing for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup with a long-term strategy focused on younger players.

As part of this transition, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to receive increased opportunities in the 50-over format.

Sources indicate that the selection committee does not see Rohit as part of its long-term ODI plans beyond the England series.

The move is said to be aimed at giving younger players adequate match experience ahead of the next World Cup.Rohit’s recent performances in the format have reportedly influenced the discussions.

The veteran batter has scored 241 runs in his last eight ODI innings, prompting selectors to evaluate future options at the top of the batting order.

Despite the reported plans, the selectors are expected to give Rohit an opportunity to prove himself during the ongoing England tour.

A strong performance could still impact future selection discussions. With around 20 ODIs remaining before the 2027 World Cup, the team management is believed to be keen on providing regular opportunities to emerging players, particularly Jaiswal, to help them settle into the squad.

There has been no official announcement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding Rohit’s ODI future.

Reports also state that no one has asked the veteran batter to retire, and any decision on stepping away from international cricket will be entirely his own.

If the reports prove accurate, the match at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground could mark the end of one of India’s most successful ODI careers.

However, an official confirmation from the BCCI or Rohit Sharma is still awaited.
