New Delhi, July 1: The Indian Navy’s stealth frigate INS Tabar on Sunday launched a major rescue and firefighting operation after receiving a distress call from MT Yi Cheng 6, a Pulau-flagged vessel en route from Kandla, India to Shinas, Oman, officials said.

The tanker, carrying 14 Indian crew members, suffered a major engine room fire and a complete power failure, the Indian Navy said in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter). Responding swiftly, INS Tabar transferred a firefighting team and equipment to the burning vessel using both its helicopter and ship’s boat.

According to the Navy, 13 naval personnel and five crew members from the stricken vessel are currently engaged in firefighting efforts. The intensity of the fire has since reduced significantly, the statement added.

The Indian Navy’s prompt intervention underscores its role as a key maritime security provider in the Indian Ocean region, with capabilities to conduct rapid response operations during emergencies at sea. Rescue operations are ongoing. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
