Dhanbad, June 25: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) inaugurated a new Student Chapter at the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, on Tuesday, in a move aimed at deepening collaboration with academic institutions and enhancing awareness of standardization among students.

Kunal Kumar, Director and Head of the BIS Jamshedpur Branch Office, presided over the event as Chief Guest and formally launched the chapter. In his keynote address, Kumar outlined the objectives behind establishing Student Chapters in BIS partner institutes, emphasizing the organization’s wider role in India’s standardization ecosystem.

The BIS Educational Outreach Programme is designed to create an interface between the academic community and the world of standards, Kumar said. He noted that such initiatives encourage innovation and knowledge exchange in areas critical to national quality infrastructure.

Professor Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director of IIT ISM Dhanbad, welcomed the initiative and reiterated the institute’s commitment to its MoU with BIS. He pointed to ongoing R&D projects undertaken in collaboration with BIS and spoke about a dedicated “BIS Corner” in the campus library to provide students access to Indian Standards and related resources.

The event also featured a technical demonstration by Kaushalendra Kumar, Scientist-E at BIS, who introduced students to the BIS online portal and detailed the operational framework of the Student Chapter.

An interactive workshop followed the inauguration, drawing participation from 60 students enrolled in the new chapter. Organizers said the session marked the beginning of a long-term effort to integrate quality and standardization topics into the academic environment.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks, signaling the start of what stakeholders hope will be a sustained and productive partnership in advancing India’s standardization goals.
