Washington, June 19: U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday criticized the European Union and Japan over ongoing trade negotiations, signaling a tougher stance on tariffs and suggesting that Washington will dictate terms if fair deals are not reached.

Speaking aboard Air Force One after leaving the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada early, Trump said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had remained at the summit for further discussions, while he returned to Washington to monitor developments in West Asia.

“The EU has been very tough with the United States over the years,” Trump told reporters. “We’re talking, but I don’t feel that they’re offering a fair deal yet. They’re either going to make a good deal or they’ll just pay whatever we say they have to pay.” Trump also suggested a similar approach with Japan, describing Tokyo as “tough” negotiators but hinting that a trade deal remains possible.

“They’re tough, the Japanese are tough, but ultimately you have to understand we’re just going to send a letter saying, ‘this is what you’re going to pay, otherwise you don’t have to do business with us’,” Trump said. “But there’s a chance.” In a move likely to escalate tensions with global pharmaceutical firms, Trump announced that tariffs on pharmaceuticals were imminent.

“We’re going to be doing pharmaceuticals very soon. That’s going to bring all the companies back into America,” he said. “It’s going to bring most of them back into, at least partially back in.”

Trump also said Canada would be required to contribute financially if it wants to participate in his administration’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense shield project.

The U.S. president’s comments come amid an increasingly protectionist tone from the White House as it pursues what officials describe as “fair and reciprocal” trade policies. Trump’s remarks signal a continued push to reshape global trade relationships on terms more favorable to U.S. industry and security interests.
