EAST RUTHERFORD, July 21 : FIFA has launched an investigation into the post-match altercation involving Argentina players and coaching staff following their 1-0 defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium.
FIFA’s disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the incidents that unfolded after the final whistle. Players and officials found guilty could face suspensions, while the Argentine Football Association (AFA) may also be fined.
The clash reportedly involved Argentina’s Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala during Spain’s victory celebrations. FIFA later clarified that no red card was issued to Paredes despite initial reports suggesting he had been sent off.
The investigation also comes after Argentina had already come under scrutiny for displaying a banner supporting the country’s claim over the Falkland Islands following their semi-final victory over England. FIFA is reviewing whether both incidents violated its disciplinary code and fair play regulations.
The disciplinary prosecutor will assess all available evidence before recommending any sanctions. FIFA has not announced a timeline for completing the investigation.
