Ranchi, April 23 : Electricity rates in Jharkhand are set to increase by Rs 1 per unit starting May 1, 2025, with the new tariff bringing the rate for domestic consumers in urban areas to Rs 8.65 per unit, up from the current Rs 6.65 per unit.
The Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission (JSERC) is in the final stages of finalizing the new tariff, with plans to announce the revised rates by April 30. The commission aims for the new rates to take effect from the start of May.
Along with the unit rate increase, the fixed monthly charge for domestic consumers is also proposed to rise from Rs 100 to Rs 200. The move follows a previous proposal by Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL), which had suggested an increase of Rs 2 per unit last year, though that proposal was not approved.
The tariff increase comes after the completion of a public hearing process in March, where JBVNL responded to objections raised by the public. Sources indicate that this year’s increase could range from 50 paise to Rs 1 per unit, though the final details are expected to be confirmed once the JSERC announces the new tariff.
The price hike is expected to have an impact on domestic electricity consumers across the state, with concerns raised about the potential burden on households.
