Patna, Aug 10: Tamil Nadu Police, with assistance from Bihar Police, have arrested a man from Fatuha in connection with the alleged theft of jewellery worth around ₹3 crore from a train in Chennai, officials said.The accused, identified as Rajan Kumar, was arrested following an investigation into the theft of a bag containing jewellery from an AC coach of a train at Chennai Central on July 24.
According to the investigation, the stolen valuables belonged to a businessman who was travelling on the train. Police used CCTV footage and technical evidence to trace the suspected involvement of Rajan Kumar to Fatuha in Patna district.A team from Chennai Central Railway Police, accompanied by local police, conducted a search in Fatuha and took the accused into custody.Police have reportedly recovered ₹4 lakh in cash from the accused.
Investigators suspect that he had sold around 40 grams of gold from the stolen jewellery in Patna City and obtained the money from the transaction.Rajan Kumar is reportedly the son of a councillor from Ward 9 of Fatuha Municipal Council.
The police are now investigating the whereabouts of the remaining jewellery and are trying to establish whether other people were involved in the alleged theft.The case is being investigated under a case registered at Chennai Central Railway Police Station.
Officials are also examining the accused’s alleged involvement in an earlier gold-loan-related case in Fatuha.According to the report, around two years ago, a Bank of India branch in Fatuha had sanctioned gold loans amounting to nearly ₹62 lakh.
During an audit, alleged irregularities involving the pledged gold were detected. A case was subsequently registered against Rajan Kumar and several borrowers.Police are examining the earlier case as part of the current investigation and are also looking into the accused’s criminal background.
The investigation into the Chennai train theft is continuing, with police focusing on the recovery of the remaining valuables and identifying any possible accomplices.
