R Praggnanandhaa delivered a standout performance in the third round of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, defeating India’s top-ranked player, Arjun Erigaisi, on Tuesday. The win propelled him to joint first place with Uzbekistan’s Abdusattorov Nodirbek, both scoring 2.5 points.
Praggnanandhaa overcame a challenging start after failing to secure a result in the opening round. In his match against Erigaisi, he faced early pressure as his opponent deployed the Catalan Opening. However, a critical mistake by Erigaisi on move 32 shifted the momentum in Praggnanandhaa’s favor, allowing him to secure a vital victory.
In other results, Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh settled for a draw against the tournament’s top seed, Fabiano Caruana of the United States. Gukesh adopted a risk-free approach, employing the Ragozin Defense against Caruana’s Queen’s Pawn Opening. Both players agreed to a draw via repetition of moves after just 24 moves.
An all-Indian clash between Leon Luke Mendonca and Pentala Harikrishna also ended in a draw. Mendonca, who had lost his first two matches, demonstrated improved play despite battling illness. He used an isolated pawn structure to neutralize Harikrishna’s efforts.
The fourth round promises high-stakes matchups. Praggnanandhaa will face fellow Indian Leon Luke Mendonca in another all-Indian clash. Gukesh is set to challenge Russian Grandmaster Alexey Sarana, while Erigaisi will meet Slovenia’s Vladimir Fedoseev.
