Patna, Aug 18: The Bihar government on Tuesday announced recruitment for 32,388 teacher posts under the fourth phase of the School Teacher Recruitment Examination (TRE-4.0), hours after competitive exam aspirants launched an indefinite hunger strike in Patna’s Gardanibagh amid threats of a larger agitation.

The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) issued the official recruitment notification covering vacancies for primary, secondary and higher secondary teachers.

The online application process will begin on September 1, 2026, and candidates can submit applications until September 30, according to the notification.

The recruitment announcement came after thousands of aspirants, led by student leader Dilip Kumar, began an indefinite hunger strike at Gardanibagh on Tuesday morning.

The protesters had demanded that Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari fulfil the recruitment commitment made in July or resign. They had also warned that if the notification was not issued within five days, they would “directly lay siege to the Bihar Legislative Assembly.”

The protesters had further threatened to gherao the Education Minister and disrupt the ongoing monsoon session of the Assembly, raising concerns within the administration about a possible large-scale student mobilisation in Patna.

The development comes amid a wider wave of student and youth protests over recruitment and examination-related issues in Bihar and neighbouring states.

While the notification has eased tensions at the Gardanibagh protest site to some extent, aspirants said they would not end their broader campaign.

“This is just the first step; the fight continues,” the protesting students said, indicating that they would continue to seek transparency in the recruitment process.

The aspirants have also demanded that the examination be conducted in a single phase, removal of contractual-service weightage in BSSC recruitments and resolution of the librarian recruitment process, which they claim has remained pending for nearly 18 years.

They said they would closely monitor the recruitment rules and the implementation of the selection process, keeping transparency and accountability at the centre of their demands.

The government’s decision also received political support from LJP (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan, who welcomed the announcement and described it as “an important step for the state’s unemployed youth.”

For the protesting aspirants, however, the recruitment notification is only a partial resolution. They maintain that the “larger fight over recruitment, transparency and government accountability is far from over.”

The announcement is being viewed as a significant development for thousands of unemployed youths in the state, but its impact on the ongoing student movement will depend on the implementation of the recruitment process and the government’s response to the remaining demands.
