Ranchi, February 21: In a major medical achievement, Sadar Hospital Ranchi successfully removed a 5-kg tumour from the cervico-dorsal region of a 54-year-old patient in a complex, high-risk surgery, marking a significant milestone in government healthcare services.
The intricate procedure was carried out by the Neurosurgery team led by Dr Vikash Kumar. The tumour had been growing for nearly 17 years in the neck and upper back region, causing severe pain, heaviness, and major difficulty in performing routine activities such as sitting, bending and sleeping.
“The tumour had grown so large that the patient found it extremely difficult to tilt the head, sit properly or even sleep,” Dr Kumar said, adding that the case was highly complex due to the tumour’s size, sensitive location and associated risks.
Doctors said the patient had previously approached several major hospitals, where surgery was reportedly declined due to the high level of risk. The Sadar Hospital team, however, accepted the challenge and successfully conducted the prolonged procedure using advanced surgical techniques, careful planning and precise execution, while managing risks such as excessive blood loss and protecting vital nerves and muscles.
Following the surgery, the patient’s condition is stable and recovery is progressing well. Doctors said the successful outcome reflects the expertise, coordination and dedication of the surgical team.
Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari congratulated the doctors and hospital staff and announced that the team would be honoured for their exceptional contribution. He termed the achievement a matter of pride for the state and said it demonstrated the government’s commitment to providing advanced and accessible healthcare to the public.
Hospital officials said the successful surgery highlights the growing capability of government hospitals to perform complex procedures and strengthens public confidence in affordable healthcare services.
The achievement underscores the state government’s ongoing efforts to modernise healthcare infrastructure and ensure that specialised and high-risk treatments are available to common people within the public health system.
