MPCC accuses centre of prolonging President’s rule as violence continues in Manipur

Imphal, Jan 6: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Monday stepped up its attack on the Centre, alleging that repeated interventions by New Delhi have failed to restore peace in the violence-hit state, a claim it linked to a fresh IED blast reported earlier in the day.

MPCC president Keisham Meghachandra Singh said a recent high-level meeting in New Delhi, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and attended by Manipur’s Director General of Police, Chief Secretary and Governor, had not yielded any clear roadmap for bringing back normalcy.

Addressing a press conference in Imphal, Meghachandra said the outcome of the meeting was “not encouraging” and argued that the fragile security situation was exposed by a fresh incident of violence just hours later. According to him, an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded around 6 am at Nganukon, injuring two local residents.

“The incident shows that despite frequent reviews and assurances, the situation on the ground remains unstable,” the Congress leader said, accusing the Centre of failing to translate discussions into effective action.

Meghachandra alleged that the Union government lacked the intent to resolve the crisis and claimed that the current situation was largely the result of its own policies. He also accused the Centre of deliberately prolonging President’s Rule in Manipur, calling it a blow to democratic and constitutional values.

“People of Manipur do not want prolonged direct control from Delhi,” he said, adding that continued central intervention without visible improvement was eroding public confidence and deepening political uncertainty.

The MPCC president further suggested that if both the Centre and the state administration were unable to restore peace, dissolving the Manipur Assembly and holding fresh elections would be the most democratic option.

Blaming the BJP for the prolonged unrest, Meghachandra described the party as the “architect of the present crisis” and accused it of pursuing a divide-and-rule policy in the state.

He urged the Centre to adopt an impartial and decisive approach, stressing that lasting peace could only be achieved through firm, unbiased measures on the ground rather than extended central rule.
