Guwahati, Aug 13: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday appealed for calm along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border after a fresh confrontation between protesters from the two states was reported in Dhemaji district.The incident occurred as an indefinite economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh entered its second day, adding to tensions in the border region.
According to reports, the situation became tense after protesters from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh clashed. Police from Arunachal Pradesh reportedly fired shots into the air to control the crowd and prevent the situation from escalating further.
Sarma urged people on both sides to exercise restraint and maintain peace, emphasising the long-standing social ties between communities living across the inter-state boundary.
He said administrative boundaries should not be allowed to damage relationships between people who have lived together as neighbours for generations.The fresh confrontation has raised concerns over the possibility of further escalation in the border areas, where disputes between the two states have periodically led to tensions.
The economic blockade, which entered its second day on Thursday, could also affect the movement of goods and vehicles between the neighbouring states if it continues.
Authorities are expected to focus on maintaining public order, ensuring the movement of essential supplies and preventing further clashes while efforts are made to address the underlying border-related concerns.
