Gas supply disruption hits households across India amid Iran conflict

Iran, Mar 19: Disruptions in global energy supply chains linked to tensions involving Iran have begun to impact households across India, with shortages of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) leading to long waiting times and supply uncertainty.

In several parts of the country, including the national capital, residents reported delays in obtaining cooking gas cylinders, forcing many families to rely on alternative arrangements.

The crisis has been triggered by disruptions in shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy transit route that handles a significant share of fuel supplies bound for Asia.

India, along with other South Asian countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, relies heavily on LPG imports, making the region particularly vulnerable to supply shocks.Industry experts said India imports around 60 per cent of its LPG requirements, with a majority of shipments routed through the Strait of Hormuz.

The slowdown in cargo movement has strained domestic distribution systems.Authorities have reportedly prioritised household supply and curtailed commercial usage in an effort to manage shortages.

However, the disruption has already led to increased waiting periods and rising concern among consumers.Energy analysts pointed out that limited storage capacity has compounded the situation.

While global energy systems typically maintain reserves sufficient for several weeks, India’s LPG storage cover remains comparatively lower, reducing its ability to absorb sudden disruptions.

The situation has also impacted industries dependent on LPG, with some units scaling back operations due to supply constraints.

Experts noted that the crisis highlights the risks associated with dependence on a single supply route and underscores the need for diversification and stronger buffer reserves.

The ongoing disruption is expected to remain a concern if tensions in the region persist, with policymakers likely to review strategies to strengthen energy security and reduce vulnerability to geopolitical shocks.
