San Francisco, April 04: OpenAI is providing free access to ChatGPT Plus for select college students in the United States and Canada until the end of May, aiming to assist students during their final exams.
Under this initiative, students will receive premium features, including GPT-4o, file uploads, voice interactions, and image generation through DALL-E, which are typically available through a $20 per month subscription.
The company is also introducing OpenAI Academy and ChatGPT Lab to enhance AI literacy, promote collaboration, and refine prompt usage. “Supporting AI literacy isn’t just about showcasing what these tools can do. It’s about letting students experiment, collaborate, and develop skills they’ll need in the workforce,” said Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s Vice President of Education.
According to Forbes, over a third of young adults in the U.S. are already using ChatGPT for academic assistance. OpenAI has also collaborated with the California State University system to expand AI-driven educational support.
By offering free access, OpenAI aims to expand the use of its AI tools in academic settings and gather data to improve its models. The move comes as part of a broader trend of AI companies integrating their technology into education. A day before OpenAI’s announcement, Anthropic launched Claude for Education, partnering with Northeastern University, the London School of Economics, and Champlain College to facilitate AI-driven learning.
As AI becomes more prevalent in education, universities may need to reassess assessment methods to ensure students develop critical thinking skills rather than relying solely on AI-generated content.
