Colombo, Jan 9: Authorities have issued an urgent public advisory as an intensifying weather system over the Bay of Bengal poses a threat to Sri Lanka’s eastern regions, with heavy rainfall and strong winds forecast in the coming hours.
According to meteorological officials, a deep depression positioned roughly 200 kilometres southeast of Batticaloa early Friday morning is moving steadily northwest and is expected to approach the coastline between Pottuvil and Trincomalee by evening. Forecast models suggest the system could strengthen into a cyclonic storm within the next 24 hours.
Weather officials warned that unsettled conditions are likely to spread across much of the island, particularly affecting the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces, where intensified showers and gusty winds are anticipated.
Maritime authorities have also cautioned of dangerous sea conditions, urging fishermen to avoid venturing into deep waters as rough seas are expected in surrounding ocean areas.
Residents in coastal and vulnerable regions have been advised to remain vigilant, minimise non-essential travel and adhere strictly to safety instructions issued by disaster management and local authorities as the situation develops.
