Three convicts serving 13-year terms recaptured in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, Dec 25: Nepal Police have rearrested three inmates who had fled Kathmandu’s Central Jail amid unrest associated with the Gen Z movement, officials said on Wednesday.

The arrests were made by a special team of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), which tracked down the fugitives from separate locations across the capital after a coordinated search operation.

Police identified the arrested men as convicts serving long-term sentences in a rape case. The trio had been behind bars since September 2017 and were each undergoing a 13-year prison term at the time of their escape.

Authorities confirmed that following their capture, the prisoners were formally handed back to the Central Jail administration on the same day, restoring them to custody without further incident.

Superintendent of Police Niranjan Datta Bhatta said the operation reflected the police force’s commitment to ensuring that escaped convicts are swiftly brought back under the justice system.

The incident comes as law enforcement agencies continue to tighten security and accountability measures in the aftermath of disruptions linked to recent protest movements in the capital.
