Colombo, Dec 25: Sri Lanka’s collective response to the recent natural disaster reflected the nation’s commitment to compassion, solidarity and shared humanity, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said on Wednesday in his Christmas message.
The President said citizens across the country extended help to those affected, demonstrating the moral values that underpin not only Christianity but all major religions. He linked the widespread relief efforts to the true spirit of Christmas, which he described as a celebration of love, peace, sharing and sacrifice.
Noting that Christmas this year comes at a decisive moment in Sri Lanka’s national journey, Dissanayake said the country is observing the festival while recovering from one of its most challenging natural disasters. He praised volunteers and ordinary citizens who travelled through difficult conditions to deliver relief, calling their actions a living expression of the Christmas message of loving one’s neighbour.
The President stressed that humanitarian action during times of crisis serves as a reminder that Christmas is not only a religious observance but also a call to social responsibility. He urged Sri Lankans to face present challenges with unity and courage, and to rebuild the nation on the foundations of empathy and mutual support.
Referring to the life of Jesus Christ, Dissanayake highlighted sacrifice, resilience and hope as guiding principles for the nation’s recovery. He expressed hope that the festive season would renew a sense of humanity and bring peace, joy and optimism to households across the country.
