Jaipur, Dec 24: Rohit Sharma produced a masterclass on his return to domestic List A cricket, blasting a scintillating 155 off just 94 balls to lead Mumbai to a commanding eight-wicket win over Sikkim in their Vijay Hazare Trophy match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Tuesday.
Playing his first Vijay Hazare Trophy match in seven years, the former India captain and current world No. 1 ODI batter was the centre of attention as more than 20,000 fans turned up on a balmy December afternoon to witness his comeback.
Rohit did not disappoint, delivering a knock of rare dominance to give Mumbai a perfect start to their campaign. Earlier, Sikkim opted to bat and posted a competitive 236 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs.
Wicketkeeper-batter Ashish Thapa anchored the innings with a fluent 79 off 84 balls, striking eight boundaries. Mumbai captain Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets to keep the scoring in check despite a solid start from the Sikkim batters.
Mumbai’s chase was effectively sealed by Rohit, who took complete control from the outset. Opening the innings with Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who contributed a useful 38, Rohit dismantled the Sikkim bowling attack with a blend of elegance and power.
He reached his 37th List A century in just 62 balls and continued to accelerate, peppering the boundary with ease.
Rohit remained unbeaten on 155, an innings laced with 18 fours and nine sixes, as Mumbai overhauled the target with nearly 20 overs to spare. Brothers Musheer Khan and Sarfaraz Khan played supporting roles to ensure a smooth finish after Rohit’s departure.
The emphatic victory underlined Mumbai’s strength in the tournament, while Rohit’s stunning performance served as a timely reminder of his enduring class in the limited-overs format.
