New Delhi, Aug 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated 184 newly built Type-VII multi-storey flats for Members of Parliament in central Delhi, a project aimed at easing the shortage of adequate housing for lawmakers and providing modern, eco-friendly residences in a vertical format.
Located on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, the complex has been designed as a self-sufficient facility with amenities to meet both residential and official requirements. Each flat offers about 5,000 square feet of carpet area, including office space, staff quarters and living areas, and is reportedly more spacious than the Type-VIII bungalows that top the government’s housing categories.
The vertical design was chosen to optimise limited land in the capital and reduce long-term maintenance costs, officials said. The complex includes a community centre for social and official engagements, and incorporates green technology with a GRIHA 3-star rating, renewable energy systems, energy-efficient fittings and an effective waste management system.
Built with monolithic concrete using aluminium shuttering, the structures meet modern earthquake-resistant standards, comply with the National Building Code 2016, and feature robust security systems. The complex is also designed to be accessible to persons with disabilities.
At the ceremony, Modi planted a Sindoor sapling, interacted with construction workers and addressed attendees, highlighting the project’s emphasis on sustainability and inclusivity.
