India’s Parliament Reconvenes After Disruptions, BJP Pushes for Budget Approvals
New Delhi, March 21 – India’s Parliament resumed proceedings on Friday after a day of disruptions, as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) moved to pass key budget demands for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
The government has issued a whip to its lawmakers, urging full attendance in the Lok Sabha to ensure support for the budgetary measures. “All members of BJP in Lok Sabha are, therefore, requested to be positively present in the House throughout the day and support the government’s stands,” the party said in a letter.
Thursday’s session saw repeated adjournments in both Houses, with Opposition lawmakers staging protests and raising slogans. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla reprimanded some members for wearing T-shirts with protest messages and instructed them to change. A similar row erupted in the Rajya Sabha, where proceedings were swiftly adjourned after members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) wore slogan-bearing T-shirts.
The BJP is pushing to fast-track budget approvals amid heightened political tensions, as the government seeks to maintain legislative momentum ahead of upcoming elections.
