Islamabad, April 30 — Pakistan on Wednesday claimed it has “credible evidence” that India is planning a military strike within the next 24 to 36 hours, escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours following a deadly terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Speaking at a press briefing, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said intelligence reports suggest India is preparing to launch military action on the pretext of alleged Pakistani involvement in the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 civilians.
“Pakistan has credible intelligence that India intends carrying out military action against Pakistan in the next 24–36 hours on the pretext of baseless and concocted allegations of involvement in the Pahalgam incident,” Tarar said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
India has not publicly responded to the statement.
Tarar reiterated that Pakistan strongly condemned the Pahalgam attack and maintained that the country had also been a frequent victim of terrorism. He accused New Delhi of acting unilaterally, saying India had “self-assumed” the roles of “judge, jury and executioner” in blaming Islamabad.
“Being a responsible state, Pakistan open-heartedly offered a credible, transparent and independent investigation by a neutral commission of experts to ascertain the truth,” Tarar said, adding that India had instead “apparently decided to tread the dangerous path of irrationality and confrontation.”
He warned that any Indian military action would have “catastrophic consequences for the complete region and beyond,” and said Pakistan would defend its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Tensions between the South Asian rivals have been high since the Pahalgam incident. India has accused Pakistan-based militants of orchestrating the attack, though no group has officially claimed responsibility.
Both countries have fought three wars since gaining independence in 1947, and previous escalations have brought them to the brink of conflict, most recently in 2019 following a deadly bombing in Pulwama, also in Kashmir.
