Guwahati, Dec 17: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Guwahati has become the first institution in Northeast India to be accredited as an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Provider Centre, marking a major milestone in strengthening trauma care and emergency medical training in the region.
The accreditation was secured under the leadership of Prof. (Col.) Ashok Puranik, Executive Director of AIIMS Guwahati. To commemorate the achievement, the institute successfully conducted its inaugural ATLS Provider Course from December 12 to 14, ushering in a new phase of structured trauma education in the Northeast.
The inaugural programme was attended by Prof. (Dr.) M. C. Mishra, Chair of ATLS India and former Director of AIIMS New Delhi, along with eminent ATLS faculty members from across the country. Their participation ensured high-quality training aligned with internationally accepted ATLS standards.
According to an official statement, the accreditation represents a significant step forward in disseminating standardised, evidence-based trauma management practices, with a particular emphasis on timely and effective intervention during the critical “golden hour” following injury.
Each ATLS course at AIIMS Guwahati is designed for 16 delegates and follows a rigorous curriculum, comprising two days of intensive didactic sessions and hands-on training, followed by a formal assessment on the third day, strictly in accordance with ATLS guidelines.
Through this initiative, AIIMS Guwahati aims to build a skilled pool of healthcare professionals and enhance trauma care capacity across the Northeast. The institute said the move is expected to strengthen emergency response systems, improve patient outcomes and contribute to a reduction in trauma-related mortality in the region.
